Thirteen years back when Sammy Gill packed bags for Australia in search of a living, he hoped to pursue his passion that of acting along with!

A youtube star today with a massive following, as he stepped in Punjab to shoot for a film Teri Meri Jodi early this year, it was a joy unparalleled.  “I started theatre in Punjab and to face the camera for a film in the same land seemed almost dreamy!” A government employee in Melbourne, it’s only once in a few years that he comes to the land of his birth that remains ‘home’ forever. “My simple house, those rooms where I studied, buffaloes nearby, the dog barking, my neighbours,” he gets sentimental speaking to us from Melbourne reminiscencing his early days.

The beginning: Acting had my heart, once I secured a decent job, I would use my weekends to put something funny on Facebook, got such immense love that now our youtube channel is a rage. Our videos have my family depicts desi life on foreign shores. In fact, its popularity only fetched me a role in film Teri Meri Jodi.

Filmy debut: Film ghaint hai ji (is super). I have got more offers, I have finalised a project or two too, but I would shoot only after the responses to my first one. If the audience like me, more films, if not I would work on my skills before another stint.

Foreign shores: I came to Australia all by myself, it was rough. Back in 2006, there were hardly any Indians, there was language barrier, climate change, no friends, I was homesick for the longest. Only thing positive was a hope to make a living. My parents now spend most their time with us – my wife and kids, it all worked out well way.

Two states: Punjab is where the heart and soul is; life is what we have created in Melbourne keeping connected to the roots. Any country is big or small because of its people. Here people do everything in their power to make their nation great; I wish that sentiment was replicated in India too. How can we get roads dirt fails me, our country is our home.

Biopic lanes: What I have got is more than what I imagined. If life allows, I would love to do a biopic on Shiv Kumar Batalvi. Be it Maye Ni Main Ik Shikra Yaar Banaya or Ik kudi, Jida Naam Muhhabbat – his lines, my lifeline.

Thrills & chills: I love to watch thrillers. Drishyam, Baazigar, Race 1 and series — Bond, Saw — my favourites. While acting an intense role my first choice, would love to explore a thriller whether horror or comedy too, romance figures the last.

Balancing act

I feel one always has time to do what you want. I work four days a week, a day spent in attending to extra work and chores, two dedicated to family each week. That’s when I make videos, spend time with family while also speaking to my friend in India on phone.

Step up

I am not chasing success but improving my craft, each single day as to success must follow me!
