Bhopal, May 11
Bhopal gas tragedy survivors feel their voice was lost in the poll din. “For us, the BJP is as good or bad as the Congress. Both have not touched the disaster site. Underground water remains but people are using it. Don’t thee victims have the right to safe drinking water,” asks a livid Abdul Jabbar, convener of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan.
He claims at least 25,000 tonnes of toxic waste is lying in the open at the solar evaporation plant, some 400 metres north of the now defunct Union Carbide plant in JP Nagar. In December 2-3, 1984, poisonous gas leaked from the plant had killed over 3,000 people in the vicinity.
“Tonnes of dumped waste remains buried in the ground that is polluting the environment. Successive governments at the Centre and state have ignored the matter and are responsible for today’s situation,” says Jabbar. Some victims say unsafe drinking water has ruined their health. — Anup Dutta
