Mumbai, June 28
Three persons lost their lives in Mumbai as the monsoon hit the city after nearly a month’s delay today.
According to the police and fire brigade, a 60-year-old woman died after being electrocuted in Andheri while two others lost their lives in the same way in the suburb of Goregaon.
Most areas in and around Mumbai received heavy rainfall with several parts of the city receiving more than 100 mm of rain in less than two hours, according to the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. While Vikhroli in the suburbs received 122 mm of rainfall, parts of suburban Andheri were flooded after 121.14 mm poured from the skies.
The Indian Meterological Department and the private Skymet Weather Station have predicted heavy rainfall across Mumbai and the Konkan region over the next 24 hours. While the iconic BEST buses were pulled out of many neighbourhoods, Mumbai’s lifeline —- the local trains —- continue to ply. Officials of the Western and Central Railways say trains are plying behind schedule as tracks are flooded in many low-lying areas. Flights in and out of Mumbai are also unaffected.
Outside Mumbai, Nashik received 324 mm of rain over the last 24 hours. — TNS
