New Delhi, June 7
The Congress today demanded the establishment of a national election fund with procedures whereby recognised parties would be distributed finances during elections.
Congress’ Abhishek Manu Singhvi demanded this, flagging massive fund spent by the BJP in the 17th LS polls.
The Congress cited a latest report by the Centre for Media Studies, which has estimated an expenditure of Rs60,000 crore in the just-concluded elections. The research attributes 45 per cent of this spending, Rs27,000 crore, to the BJP.
Singhvi demanded a white paper on “commercialisation and monetisation of elections” and said the government must detail what steps it would take to prevent such “corruption”.
The Congress raised concerns around massive expenditure by the BJP disturbing the level playing field essential to elections. “Rs27,000 crore is a huge amount. It is 10 per cent of the defence budget, 30 per cent of the education budget and nearly 40 per cent of the health budget,” he said. — TNS
