The National Commission for Women has suo motu taken notice of a BJP MLA “beating up and kicking” a woman in public and has sought a report from the state police even as the two disputing parties claimed to have “reached a compromise”.
State BJP president Jitu Vaghani too has issued a show-cause notice to MLA Balram Thawani, caught on camera kicking a young woman lying on the road. He has been asked to respond in three days and issue a public apology.
The incident late last evening assumed a political hue after the victim, Nitu Tejwani, turned out to be a ward unit president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). She had gone to Thawani’s office regarding the water crisis in Naroda area of Ahmedabad. She allegedly threatened to sit on a dharna in front of the office if the MLA and his younger brother Kishore Thawani, the BJP member of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, failed to take any action.
Dragged out of the office, she was beaten up publicly and repeatedly kicked by the MLA. A video of the incident went viral, embarrassing the BJP. Tejwani told mediapersons later in the evening that she had “reached a compromise” after the MLA “profusely apologised”. State BJP spokesman Bharat Pandya, however, said the party had taken a serious note of the incident.
