Sena attacks Modi govt on slowdown

Mumbai, June 3

After patching up with the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha poll, the Shiv Sena today resumed attacking the Modi government via its mouthpiece “Saamna”.

In a hard-hitting editorial, Saamna asked newly appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to come up with solution to the economic slowdown.

“Mere propaganda cannot tackle the problem of soaring unemployment. Data from the National Sample Survey Office shows unemployment at 6.1 per cent is the highest in 45 years,” it said. It went on to say that the people wanted to know the government’s plan of action in the matter.

Saamna pointed out that the government had failed to fulfil its promise of providing 2 crore jobs a year. “The Nehru-Gandhi family surely cannot be blamed .... for failing to fulfil the promise to create 10 crore jobs over the last five years,” Saamna said.

The newspaper said vacant positions were not being filled by employers, including government agencies. “Only 1.48 lakh persons were recruited in 2015-16 when more than 37 lakh posts were vacant. In the following year, only 9.21 lakh persons were recruited although there were 23 lakh posts to be filled,” the editorial said, quoting government statistics.
