New Delhi: Overturning its earlier decision, Air India on Tuesday announced that pilgrims on their return journey from Saudi Arabia after Haj will be allowed to carry holy water from Zamzam "well within permissible baggage allowance". Air India had on July 4 informed all travel agents that till September 15, due to change of aircraft and limited seats, Zamzam cans won't be allowed on AI966 (Jeddah-Hyderabad-Mumbai) and AI964 (Jeddah-Cochin) flights.TNS
Navy’s White Tigers squadron turns 60
New Delhi: The longest serving combat unit of the Indian Navy, the White Tigers squadron, which played a stellar role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, has turned 60. Flying Sea Hawks, the unit had stopped sections of the Pakistani armed forces from fleeing into Myanmar following the surrender of East Pakistan on December 17, 1971. The war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh, was the only major instance that the White Tigers, Indian Naval Air Squadron-300, saw action. PTI
Homicide rate declines 10% in India
United Nations: The overall homicide rate in India has decreased by 10 per cent over a period of six years till 2015 but the trend increased "noticeably" in some northern states, according to a UN report. The number of homicide victims fell from 48,167 in 2000 to 46,460 in 2010, 44,373 in 2015 and 42,678 in 2016. Males constitute less than 20 per cent of the total homicide victims in 2016 in India, it said. PTI
MP moots law to reserve 70% jobs for locals
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath on Tuesday said the state government is considering to bring a law to ensure 70 per cent jobs to local youths in the private sector. Nath said this in the Assembly while intervening in a discussion on a question on age relaxation for “outsider” candidates in MP Public Service Commission and other job recruitment exams. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and West Bengal have a local language paper in competitive exams, which reduces opportunities for youths from other states. PTI
At 12, UP child prodigy has penned 135 books
Ayodhya: A 12-year-old child prodigy from UP has written 135 books on subjects like religion and biographies of well known personalities, including CM Yogi Adityanath. Mrigendra Raj said he started writing at the age of six and his first book was a compilation of poems. He uses the pen name of 'Aaaj Ka Abhimanyu' and already has four world records to his credit. His mother is a teacher at a private school in Sultanpur and father an employee with state's Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department. IANS
