BSY is Karnataka CM, floor test on July 29

Bengaluru, July 26

Karnataka BJP stalwart BS Yediyurappa was sworn in as Chief Minister of the state for fourth time on Friday in a sudden twist to the protracted high-voltage political drama in the state with a big challenge to manage numbers staring him in the face.

Shortly after the oath, Yediyurappa said he would move a motion of confidence in the Assembly on July 29 to prove his majority, apparently confident of winning it with the expectation that 16 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs may abstain as they did on Tuesday, giving him the edge.

Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office to 76-year-old Yediyurappa at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. Yediyurappa alone was sworn-in.

Yediyurappa is assuming office three days after the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) government with the defeat of the motion of confidence moved by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in the Assembly by 99-105 votes.

In a sudden development this morning, Yediyurappa met the Governor to stake claim and requested him to administer the oath of office and secrecy to him today itself, following which Vala invited him to form the government.

Before the swearing-in, Yediyurappa said he would decide his ministry after consulting party chief Amit Shah.

SC to hear plea for reviving graft case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to consider a plea to re-open a nine-year-old corruption case against BS Yediyurappa and Congress leader DK Shivakumar. The development came hours before Yediyurappa was sworn in as CM. Case relates to de-notification of 4.2 acres from acquisition in May 2010 to “favour” Shivakumar. TNS
