Are Rohingya entitled to refugee status in India? The Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to take up the moot question surrounding the controversy arising out of the Centre’s decision to deport 40,000 Rohingya who fled to India following violence against them in Myanmar.
A three-judge Bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi said it would hold final hearing in August on petitions challenging the Centre’s decision to deport to Myanmar Rohingya, many of whom are now settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan. It asked the parties to file brief written submissions.
The Centre has requested the court to decide if illegal immigrants should be given refugee status. Registered as refugees under the United Nations High Commission of Refugees, Rohingya immigrants Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir had moved the top court in 2017 challenging the Centre’s move to deport them.— TNS
