Chandigarh, July 9
Even though the country remains prone to calamities, the Centre’s annual outlay for procurement of equipment by the National Disaster Response Force has been slashed by almost 40 per cent.
From Rs40 crore in 2018-19, the allocated funds have come down to Rs25 crore for the current fiscal, according to information placed in Parliament by the Home Ministry today. The allocation was Rs32 crore in 2016-17 and Rs33.72 crore in 2017-18. The cut comes at a time when the force plans to raise four additional battalions. These would be based at HP, J-K, Uttarakhand and Delhi.
The NDRF was conceived as a specialised force for responding to any natural or man-made disaster and carry out rescue and relief operations.
