New Delhi, July 27
The government is all set to introduce a Bill to develop uniform safety procedures for all specified dams in the LS on Monday. Dr Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, minister of the newly formed Jal Shakti Ministry, will introduce the Dam Safety Bill, 2019, that seeks to provide a legal and institutional mechanism to ensure safe functioning of dams in the country and related issues.
The proposed legislation provides for proper surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of over 5,200 large dams in the country and about 450 are under construction. It addresses all issues concerning the safety of dams, including their regular inspection, emergency action plan, comprehensive safety review, adequate repair and maintenance funds and instrumentation and safety manuals. It also specifies the onus of dam safety. — TNS
