AIADMK Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu V Maitreya, who retired along with four other members today, urged the House not to condole his death since it had failed to take notice of the death of Tamilians in Sri Lanka in May 2009.
“Since this House did not bother to do the justice… did not bother to do the basic human courtesy towards my brothers and sisters of Eelam, I urge that this House should not pass any condolence resolution or observe silence for me also whenever the situation arises,” Maitryean said during his farewell speech.
He noted that on many occasions the House witnessed reading of obituary references and passed condolence resolutions for people, including people from remote corners of the globe, whom the members might not have known or seen.
“But, in May 2009, when more than one-an-a-half lakh innocent people from Tamil Eelam, who are my umbilical cord brethren, were killed in genocide in Lanka, this House did not even take notice of it, leave alone passing resolution of condolence or observing silence,” he said.
Maitreyan, an oncologist, has been a three-time RSmember. Chairman Venkaiah Niadu said: “He is emotional because he is a man of emotions. We understand his emotions.”
The other members who retired are CPI’s D Raja and KR Arjunan, R Lakshmanan and T Rathinavel — all from the AIADMK.
