New Delhi, July 24
The Rajya Sabha today passed a Bill amending the POCSO Act, which incorporates provision of death penalty in cases of aggravated sexual assault on children and also providing stringent punishments and fine for other crimes against minors. Now the Bill will be sent to Lok Sabha for its consideration.
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which was introduced by Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani in the House yesterday, also provides for fines and jail term to curb child pornography.
Appreciating TMC leader Derel O’Brien for sharing his experience of sexual harassment, Irani in her reply to the debate talked of how much the incident leaves an imprint on the mind. She said over six lakh sexual offenders have been registered under the National Sexual Offenders Registry. Congress leader Vivek K Tankha, however, lamented despite the stringent provisions, incidents of such offences are not stopping. — TNS
