New Delhi, July 9
India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today agreed to build on their growing strategic links as well as further their trilateral cooperation initiatives, especially in Africa.
The joint project, a centre for IT excellence, will come up in Ethiopia. It will mark the beginning of more tripartite projects in Africa, said sources. The first destination of South-South cooperation, as far as India is concerned, has strong links with both India and the UAE with the three partners contributing to land, building, equipment and training.
India’s projects have usually been a North-South partnership such as joint work with the US in West Africa, a hospital project in Kenya with the Japanese and plans to partner France mainly in West Africa. UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday and called on PM Narendra Modi today.
With Jaishankar, he discussed bilateral, regional and international matters and invited PM Modi to the UAE. As the UAE had conferred on him the Order of Zayed during the elections, PM Modi will be formally felicitated when he visits the country.
UAE has gained importance in recent years due to its greater involvement in regional affairs as a strong ally of the US which maintains three military bases there. It participated in enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya in the runup to regime change in Tripoli and is also involved in the Yemen conflict.
