Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday said “empowerment without appeasement and development with dignity” is the new mantra of the Narendra Modi government to carry out welfare programmes for the minorities. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Naqvi said the minorities meant centrally notified communities like Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi, Muslim and Christian and not just Muslims. There is not a single district in the country where minorities were not benefited from welfare programmes initiated by the Modi government since 2014, he claimed. TNS
RS clears arbitration centre Bill
Rajya Sabha on Thursday cleared the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill seeking creation of an institutional and legal framework to make India a hub of domestic and international arbitration. Also, the House passed the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which seeks to ring in changes in the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. It includes setting a deadline for resolution of the disputes within 12 months, as against the present open-ended structure. Following amendments to the law, an aggrieved party can directly move the proposed Centre for arbitration. TNS
Demand for task force to fight drug menace
A BJP member in the Lok Sabha on Thursday demanded setting up of a task force to deal with the menace of drug abuse in the country. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Meenakashi Lekhi (BJP) said several people were suffering from drug abuse. “India is a vulnerable country for smuggling of drugs as the country too is placed at Golden Crescent and Golden Triangle,” she said. “I call upon all the members that we all must set up a task force to removes drugs from the society,” she said.
