Tension prevailed in Agra and Meerut today as members of two communities indulged in brick-batting during a protest march against the lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand.
A youth was reportedly hurt in the scuffle, forcing the police to resort to baton charge to disperse the violent crowd. According to police sources, the organisers in Agra had not sought permission for the protest march from Jama Masjid to the Collectorate.
Several youth carrying banners and posters reportedly tried to force some shopkeepers of the majority community to down shutters in solidarity with the protest following which the scuffle took place.
Agra SSP Jogendra Kumar said the miscreants were being identified after which cases would be lodged against them under appropriate sections. In Meerut, the police lathicharged people who had gathered outside various masjids in Mawana city to take out a protest march.
