Anti-GM lobby wants FSSAI panel recast

New Delhi, August 2

The anti-GM lobby has raised “serious and strong objections” to a panel on GMOs and foods constituted by the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) — an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare — claiming that some of its members are “GM crop and fish developers themselves”.

Demanding that it be “scrapped and reconstituted with independent food/health safety experts”, the Coalition for a GM-Free India alleged that some of its members would turn the panel “into a promotional body for GMOs and GM foods” and also that it would be a “direct conflict of interest” for them “especially now that applications are being sent to it from the GEAC for various GM foods”.

It has also sought to know the terms of reference of the committee and how and why particular experts were chosen and the “relevance of their expertise” in it. — TNS
