New Delhi, August 26
The Election Commission has barred Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-U from using its poll symbol arrow in the upcoming Jharkhand and Maharashtra Assembly elections, as it is very similar to the “bow and arrow” allotted to the regional parties in the two states — JMM and Shiv Sena.
Noting that the EC had earlier given concession to the JD-U under a rule to contest polls in the two states using its symbol, officials in the poll panel said, but it has now been withdrawn after Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) made a plea that similarity in symbols could confuse voters.
“Having considered all aspects, the commission has directed that the JD-U will not be granted concession in Jharkhand and Maharashtra henceforth,” the EC said.
In March, the EC had ordered that the JMM and the Shiv Sena cannot use their poll symbol in Bihar. The move had come after the JD-U moved the poll panel in January. The observation is equally applicable for the present case of JMM, the EC said, adding the same principle would apply in Maharashtra where Shiv Sena has the “bow and arrow” as reserved symbol. Now, the JD-U would contest in Jharkhand and Maharashtra on “free symbol”. — TNS
