New Delhi, August 26

While heated arguments took place in the Special CBI court on the issue of bail for former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram arrested in the INX Media case, five former Tamil Nadu MLAs, including of the Congress, created ruckus and aired protest outside the judicial complex.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal led the battery of lawyers vehemently, defending Chidambaram’s bail plea, which was opposed by the CBI through Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta. The investigative agency was successful in getting extension of police remand for another four days, till August 30.

The police remand had ended today, necessitating the CBI to seek extension of Chidambaram’s remand for further interrogation.

The former legislators raised slogans in Chidambaram’s favour on the court premises immediately after the court allowed extension of the police remand.

Subsequently, they protested outside the court complex in company of the battery of lawyers from the Congress’ legal team. They raised slogans in favour of Sonia Gandhi. They stayed put outside the court premises for long after security personnel whisked away Chidambaram after completion of court’s proceedings.

The personnel along with the former Finance Minister avoided the gate where the media was waiting.

“We want bail of the former Finance Minister. If the government has any proof against him, it must bring it on the table,” one of the former MLAs, Subburam Rama, said, alleging that the government was acting in a hush-hush manner.

“Mr Chidambaram has been India’s best Finance Minister. The government is trying to implicate him,” said another former legislator PR Sundaram.
