Tweaking rules pertaining to the acceptance of gifts by public servants, the Centre has enhanced the monetary value of items that can be accepted by them without sanction of the government.

Government servants holding any Group-A and Group-B positions can now no longer accept gifts worth more than Rs 5,000 in their official capacity without permission. Earlier, this value was pegged at Rs 1,500.

According to orders issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on August 6, the limit for employees holding any Group-C or Group-D posts has also been enhanced from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000. These revised limits already apply to officers of the three All India Services and have been now extended to other cadres.

Government servants are often given a gift or a memento at various official events that they have to attend as part of their duties. Earlier, government servants could retain gifts valued up to Rs 1,000 received from foreign dignitaries, while gifts valued above this limit were subject to government instructions. This limit has been scrapped under new instructions.
