RS defers Jallianwala Bagh Bill to next session

New Delhi, August 7

Lacking consensus in the House to pass the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial (amendment) Bill without discussion, the Rajya Sabha today deferred it to the next session. The Bill seeks to remove the Congress president as a trustee the memorial.

The government, while moving the Bill in the House for consideration and passage, requested the members to approve it without discussion, as this year was the centenary of the Jallianwala massacre and also in view of the death of Sushma Swaraj.

Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel piloted the Bill in the House with an aim to amend the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Act, 1951, which was passed by Lok Sabha on August 2. But the Congress’ deputy leader in the Upper House said the minister must be allowed to talk about salient features of the Bill, which was agreed to by the minister. Sharma said members didn’t want any acrimony or argument on the last day of the session. — TNS
