The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to consider former BJP ideologue KN Govindacharya’s plea for live streaming or recording of day-to-day hearing in the Ayodhya land dispute beginning on Tuesday.
“We don’t know if we have equipment for live streaming or recording of proceedings,” a Bench headed by Justice SA Bobde told senior counsel Vikas Singh after he mentioned Govindacharya’s plea for urgent hearing.
If live streaming was not possible, recording of the hearing may be done, Singh submitted. However, refusing urgent hearing on the plea, the Bench said it was an institutional issue which would be considered on the administrative side.
The SC had in September last year allowed live-streaming of court proceedings of cases of constitutional and national importance, saying this openness was like “sunlight” which is the “best disinfectant”.
Contending that right to know was a fundamental right, Govindacharya demanded that necessary orders be passed for live streaming of proceedings in the Ayodhya matter as the court itself ordered so last year. A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi on Friday fixed August 6 to commence hearing in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case after mediation attempts to find an amicable solution to the vexed problem. — TNS
