Trouble for 72-year-old former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand may mount as the 23-year-old law student on Monday charged him of sexually exploiting her for a year and the Uttar Pradesh police refusing to lodge a complaint against him.
Speaking to reporters in Shahjahanpur, she alleged she had been forced to lodge her complaint against the former minister in Delhi as the UP police had remained non-cooperative.
“The Delhi Police registered my complaint at Lodhi Road police station and forwarded it to Shahjahanpur police, who are still not registering the rape case,” she alleged while speaking to reporters with her face covered with a scarf.
According to her, she had narrated her tale of continuous sexual harassment and rape to the special investigation team (SIT), “which interrogated her for 11 hours on Sunday but was yet to arrest him”.
The law student hit headlines on August 24 when she disappeared after posting a video on the social media about an influential person allegedly sexually exploiting her. In the video, she had not named anyone. But the missing person complaint filed by her father mentioned Swami Chinmayanand, who is the president of Swami Shukdevanand Post Graduate College, where the complainant is studying.
The three-time Lok Sabha MP had been a Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. On the basis of the father’s complaint, the Uttar Pradesh police booked Chinmayanand on charges of kidnapping on August 27. Finally, she was traced in Rajasthan on August 30.
On the directions of the Supreme Court, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a SIT headed by IG Naveen Arora. Last week, the Supreme Court had also ordered the transfer of the student and her brother to other law colleges saying it was important for their future.
However, just like the rape accused Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, BJP senior leader Chinmayanand has also denied the rape and sexual harassment charges of the law student claiming it was part of a larger conspiracy against him.
