Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today said his party’s alliance with the BJP was intact and both parties would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra together.
“The alliance is ‘atal’. The coalition will return to power once again after polls,” Thackeray said at a function where the new coach for Mumbai metro railway was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Shiv Sena chief admitted that the party’s goal was power. “We want power... We are not hungry for it. We don’t want power for power’s sake. But we have to be in power to develop Maharashtra,” Thackeray said even as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cheered. Uddhav’s statement comes while leaders of both parties have begun seat-sharing negotiations ahead of next month’s Assembly elections in Maharashtra.
Thackeray pointed out that Republican Party of India leader and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, who was present on the dais, was also part of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra. He then praised Modi for the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, a Sena demand for many years. “I am proud that the dream of crores of Indians has become a reality. We should thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for that,” Thackeray said.
Meanwhile, the PM was here today to inaugurate the first coach for the Mumbai metro railway network delivered by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. Modi also lauched three more metro lines covering Mumbai and surrounding areas. With this, the city will have 14 metro corridors in the coming years. The deadline for the projects is 2026.
