Trade unions boycott meet on wage ceiling

New Delhi, September 26

Ten major Central Trade Unions, ideologically opposed to the BJP, boycotted a meeting convened by Union Labour Ministry on Thursday for consultations on the ministry’s proposal for revision of the monthly wage ceiling to enable the calculation of compensation under the Employees’ Compensation Act.

The RSS-affiliate BMS attended it to demand fixation of a higher ceiling but the unions with a Left leaning skipped the meeting in protest against the INTUC not being invited. Those that did not attend the meeting included the AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC in addition to INTUC.

The government has proposed to revise the monthly wage ceiling limit from Rs 8,000 to more than Rs 14,000 for the calculation of compensation. The BMS and other unions, who attended the meeting, demanded revision of the ceiling to Rs 21,000.

“We will root for Rs 21,000,” said BMS national head CM Saji Narayanan.

Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said the ministry could not peg the ceiling at more than Rs 14,000 as the entire cost was to be borne by the employers. He expressed concern over unions skipping the meet.
