New Delhi, October 28
Congress veteran Karan Singh today wrote to Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu saying the current Parliament building should not be abandoned and alternatives should be devised to ease the strain on the existing complex.
In his letter to Naidu, Singh, a former Rajya Sabha MP, said the “beautiful, unique, round Parliament” should not be abandoned for a modern one.
“In my view, it should be possible for us to shift unnecessary material and offices out of the present building and extend the halls to accommodate more members,” he wrote.
Singh urged Naidu to consider locating the Lok Sabha in the Central Hall of Parliament where the Constituent Assembly met for several years and shift the Rajya Sabha to the Lok Sabha hall.
“The old Rajya Sabha Hall then can be used as the Central Hall-type lounge for members. This should be far better than abandoning this magnificent building, which is redolent with history and the memory of our great Constitution and Parliamentarians,” Singh wrote. — TNS
