Jaipur: Around 64.4 per cent of over 4.8 lakh electors on Monday exercised their franchise in Manadwa and Kheenvsar Assembly bypolls in Rajasthan. It was an incident-free bypoll in both the constituencies, Anand Kumar, Chief Election Officer of the EC, claimed here. Though Mandawa recorded a 69.62 per cent turnout, Kheenvsar saw 62.61 per cent voting. Congress’ ex-minister Harendra Mirdha faced a direct contest against RLTP’s Narayanram Beniwal, younger brother of party’s convener and MP Hanuman Beniwal, and an Independent Ankur Sharma on the Kheenvsar seat. Whereas nine candidates are in a neck-and-neck contest on the Mandawa seat. OC
Sharp decline in voter turnout in UP
Lucknow: Despite pleasant, weather voters stayed away from polling in the byelections to the 11 Assembly seats on Monday. The indifference of the voters resulted in the overall polling percentage being 47.05 per cent, almost 13 per cent less than the 59.99 per cent votes cast in the same seats during the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2017. None of the 11 seats managed to improve upon voting percentage of 2017. TNS
Voting in Huzurnagar passes off peacefully
Hyderabad: The bypoll to Huzurnagar Assembly constituency in Telangana passed off peacefully amidst tight security. The polling started at 7 am and no untoward incident was reported till late evening from any of the 302 polling stations. Till 2 pm, the polling percentage had crossed 60, said the EC official. The main contest is between TRS candidate S Saidi Reddy and Congress' N Padmavati Reddy, wife of state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy. The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of Uttam Kumar Reddy from the Assembly after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda. TNS
Heavy rain mars polling in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain marred bypoll to five Assembly seats in Kerala, especially Ernakulam, on Monday. A woman was arrested at a Manjeshwaram polling booth in Kasaragod for impersonation. She was later released on bail. Heavy rain affected voting during early hours in Ernakulam. Voters had to wade through water-logged roads to cast their votes. Polling went off smoothly in four other constituencies. Chief Electoral officer Teeka Ram Meena said 10 water-logged booths on the ground floor were shifted to the first floor in Kochi. Voting in Ernakulam was not affected, he said. PTI
