New Delhi, November 13

A majority of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officials are opposed to its president Narendra Batra’s call to boycott the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

After shooting was dropped from the programme for the Games to be held in Birmingham, National Rifle Association of India president Raninder Singh called for the boycott, which was later backed by Batra. However, Batra’s view isn’t supported by most of the officials as they feel the boycott will adversely affect athletes in other sports.

The IOA top brass is scheduled to discuss this issue with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief Louise Martin and CEO David Gevemberg tomorrow, in an effort to thrash out the differences between the two bodies after shooting was dropped. An angry IOA did not attend CGF’s General Assembly in Rwanda early this year.

A few top IOA officials met here today to discuss the agenda for the CGF meet, and most of them were against boycotting CWG 2022. However, as a strategy IOA would raise the threat of a boycott to pressurise CGF into accommodating shooting in the Games. Both Gevemberg and Martin have said several times that there is no chance that shooting could be included in the 2022 programme.
