Appoint ECs via collegium system, says Quraishi

Hyderabad: Former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi has suggested a collegium system to appoint election commissioners on the lines of selection of judges, Chief Information Commissioner and Chief Vigilance Commissioner. He said fingers have been raised against the EC recently and this will not happen if the appointment of election commissioners is done through a collegium system. Election Commissioners are currently appointed by the government. The former CEC said time had also come to debate the first-past-the-post electoral system. There can be political consensus in India to introduce this kind of system, he said. PTI

EC removes former BSF DG from police observer’s job

Kolkata: Following objections from the Trinamool Congress and CPM, the Election Commission on Thursday removed retired BSF DG KK Sharma from the job of Special Central Police Observer (SCPO) for West Bengal and replaced him with Vivek Dubey, ADGP, Andhra Pradesh Police. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticised the appointment of Sharma, questioning his neutrality since he had attended an event organised by an outfit that is said to have got connections with the RSS. The event in question was organised by ‘Seemanta Chetana Manch’, an NGO, in Kolkata. The poll panel had appointed Sharma as SCPO for West Bengal and Jharkhand to oversee the security deployment.
