New Delhi, November 1
The government today set up a seven-member search committee to select full-time members of the new apex medical regulator, the National Medical Commission. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba is the chairman of the committee with Health Secretary Preeti Sudan being its convener.
The panel has three medical, one non-medical expert, apart from a representative of the state medical council. Ajay Kumar Khanna of Uttarakhand Medical Council made it to the search panel as a representative of the state medical councils. He was selected via a draw of lots recently held to pick 25 of the 33 members of the NMC.
The remaining members of the commission will be selected by the search committee. These members will have four-year tenure as against two-year tenure that 25 members selected earlier will have. The panel will primarily select chairperson of the NMC, four presidents of NMC’s autonomous boards (Board for UG education, PG education, medical assessment and medical ethics) and three non-medical experts. Ex officio members of the NMC will be Director General, Health Services; DG, Indian Council of Medical Research; and a Health Ministry representative (Additional Secretary Arun Singhal).
The ministry has received 912 applications for various NMC posts. — TNS
