EC announces bypoll to one RS seat each in K’taka, UP
New Delhi: Bypolls in two Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka and UP will be held on December 12, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. The Karnataka seat fell vacant after Congress member KC Ramamurthy resigned and joined the BJP. The seat in UP fell vacant after Samajwadi Party member Tazeen Fatma resigned to contest the Rampur Assembly bypoll. PTI
TDP chief on 12-hr hunger strike against sand mafia
Hyderabad: TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu started a 12-hour hunger strike against what he called “Sand Deeksha” to protest shortage of sand by “sand mafia” at the “instance of the high and mighty in state politics”. Naidu along with families of construction workers, who had committed suicide due to non-availability of work, started the protest in Vijayawada on Thursday. tns
HC order on Chidambaram’s bail petition likely today
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court is likely to pronounce on Friday its order on the bail plea of former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who is lodged in Tihar Jail, in the INX Media money laundering case. Justice Suresh Kait had reserved the order on November 8 on the bail petition after hearing the arguments of counsels for Chidambaram and the Enforcement Directorate. PTi
Navy sailor dies due to bullet injury on INS Angre
Mumbai: A Navy sailor died due to a bullet injury at naval station INS Angre in Mumbai on Thursday, a defence statement said. Akhilesh Yadav, 25, was found in a pool of blood on Thursday evening. The bullet was fired from his service rifle, but the statement did not specify if it was a case of accidental firing or something else. He was rushed to naval hospital INS Ashvini where he was declared dead on arrival. Colaba police and naval authorities are investigating the matter. PTI
