Railways dominated the proceedings as Sumit and Satyawart Kadian won the gold each in the Tata Motors Senior National Wrestling Championships to clinch their berths for the South Asian Games.
Sumit (125kg) beat Maharashtra’s Abhijit 5-0 for gold on the opening day of the competition. Kadian extended Railways’ dominance by defeating Kapil Chaudhary of Uttar Pradesh 9-0 in a one-sided final bout in the 97kg category.
In the 74kg category final, Gourav Baliyan of Uttar Pradesh defeated Parveen Rana of Railways 5-3 in a tough contest.
Continuing his fine form, U-23 World Championships silver medallist Ravinder bagged the first gold for the Services with a dominating 12-2 win over Sonaba Tanaji of Services in the final of the 61kg category. In the 70kg category semifinal, Naveen of Jharkhand beat Naveen of Services before defeating Vishal of Haryana for the gold. Pawan Kumar of Railways beat Deepak in the 86kg category final. Monu of Services beat Sunil Kumar of Haryana to win the 92kg category final.
The second day of the competition will see top women wrestlers in action. Vinesh Phogat (55kg), Sakshi Malik (62kg), Divya Kakran (68kg), Seema Bisla (50kg), Sarita More (57kg) and Navjot Kaur (65kg) will compete in their respective weight categories.
Railways Sports Promotion Board bagged the team championhip with 149 points while Services Sports Control Board took the second spot with 148 points. Haryana finished third with 141 points.
The gold winning wrestlers in the seven categories — men’s freestyle 57kg, 61kg, 65kg, 74kg, 86kg, 97kg and 125kg; women’s 50kg, 53kg, 57kg, 59kg, 62kg, 68kg, 76kg — at the ongoing Nationals will confirm a berth in the South Asian Games where wrestling events are scheduled from December 6 to 9. — PTI
