Former Central Information Commissioner M Sridhar Acharyulu today wrote to chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha questioning their parties’ decision to support RTI Amendment Bill passed by Parliament.
In his letter addressed to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Acharyulu asked them to release detailed statements explaining what compelled them to accept this “unconstitutional Bill which destroys the independence of information commissioners”.
“I am surprised when you have supported the RTI (Amendment) Bill, and asked your MPs in Rajya Sabha to vote for this Bill. I do not know whether you or your MPs have read the Bill and understand the implications of the changes are proposed,” the former CIC wrote in his letter.
“Do you know that the Bill kills independence of not only the CICs but also the Information Commissioners in your states?” he asked the trio.
