Canada make history, reach Davis Cup final

Canada reached the Davis Cup final for the first time as they won a thrilling semifinal against Russia today with Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil clinching victory in the deciding doubles rubber.

Shapovalov and Pospisilcombined to beat Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov 6-3 3-6 7-6(5).

Things had looked bad for Canada when Pospisil's incredible run of singles wins here came to an end in the opener against Rublev, the 29-year-old going down 6-4 6-4. But Shapovalov levelled things up when he beat Khachanov 6-4 4-6 6-4, sending the tie down to the wire.

Rafa carries Spain into semis

Rafael Nadal won back-to-back matches to propel Spain to a 2-1 victory over Argentina and a place in the semifinals of the new-look Davis Cup on Friday.

World No. 1 Nadal thrashed Diego Schwartzman 6-1 6-2 to pull Spain level after Guido Pella put the Argentines ahead with a 6-7(7) 7-6(7) 6-1 win over Pablo Carreno.

Nadal then teamed with Marcel Granollers to beat Maximo Gonzalez and Leonardo Mayer 6-4 4-6 6-3 in a must-win doubles match to see Spain into a final-four clash with Great Britain who eased into the semis with an efficient 2-0 effort over Germany.

"I had a good singles match, but the doubles came down to a few balls because the game was very close," Nadal said.  — Agencies

Sasi Mukund pulls out of Pakistan tie 

New Delhi: Young Sasi Kumar Mukund today pulled out of the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Pakistan due to a foot injury, making it a six-member Indian squad that will travel to Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. A 3-day training camp concluded with a high-intensity session at the DLTA here today. Mukund, who was named as a reserve member, suffered the injury while playing a tournament in Portugal. "Unfortunately Sasi will not travel with us. He has informed that he sustained the injury while playing the doubles with compatriot Purav Raja," India's Davis Cup coach Zeeshan Ali said during the team's practice session. Mukund is the second Indian player to pull out of the tie days after Rohan Bopanna withdrew due to a shoulder injury. "I hurt myself. I can't put my weight down properly due to the injury," said Mukund. PTI
