Following the public outcry against a succession of rape cases across the state, the Uttar Pradesh Government on Monday cleared a proposal to set up 218 fast-track courts for speeding up the hearing of cases of crime against women and minors.
This was among the 33 proposals cleared by the Cabinet meeting presided over by CM Yogi Adityanath.
Speaking to reporters, Law Minister Brajesh Pathak said of the 218 fast-track courts 144 courts will hear cases of rape and 74 courts will hear cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Pathak said 218 posts of additional session judges were being created and the posts of support staff would also be created soon.
An estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh will be incurred to run each of these newly created fast track courts. A total of Rs 163.50 crore annually be required for this. Of this, 60 per cent of the cost would be borne by the Central Government, while the remaining 40 per cent would be the share of the state government, said the minister.
In places, where building for the special court is not available, space would be hired on rent, said the minister. The courts would start functioning right away.
According to the minister, in Uttar Pradesh, there are presently 42,389 pending POSCO cases and 25,749 pending cases of rape. In recent times, most cases are being reported against minors, including the ones from Kanpur, Mainpuri, Lucknow, Jhansi and Unnao.
Another major decision taken by the Cabinet was regarding Delhi’s second international airport in Jewar. It approved to give the contract to Zurich Airport International.
